Spirit Lake Trail, Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, BC

According to Haida legend, the Waasgo (a sea monster, half wolf and half orca) had a tunnel from its home in Spirit Lake to Skidegate Inlet where it would hunt whatever came in its path. Thankfully, a Haida warrior was able to slay the supernatural beast and today a beautiful trail network has been created to guide people through the dense forest to the sparkling little lake at the heart of it. Steep for the first 15 minutes, the trail levels out and wooden bridges make it easy to cross the many creeks that flow into the lake.
